01 Finished curtains

Enter the measurements for one window. Every window in this plan uses the same size, fabric and allowances.

Measure the working span, excluding decorative finials.
From your chosen hanging point to the finished hem.
Each curtain is made from one or more joined fabric widths.
2 means flat curtain width is at least twice the coverage width.
For different sizes, calculate separately; copy or back up each plan before starting another.
02 Face fabric
The full width as sold, before trimming the selvages.
Only plain, non-directional fabric is supported.

Full-width vertical drops of face fabric only. Pattern matching, sideways cutting, lining and interlining need a different plan.

03 Allowances & shop cutting

These example allowances are editable. Check the totals required by your heading and hemming method before cutting.

Allowances and purchase rounding
Deducted from both edges of every fabric width.
Total consumed by all folds at one outer curtain edge.
Each join consumes two seam allowances.
All fabric consumed above the finished hanging point.
Include every fold used to make the bottom hem.
Added once to each cut length.
Added to the raw project total before shop rounding.
Use the smallest length your shop sells, such as ⅛ yd or 0.5 m.
Common increments
Optional coverage from each end of the rod back to the wall.
Add only if it is not already in your rod measurement.
04 Optional fabric budget

THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED

Your finished size is only the starting point.

Side hems, joined edges and trimmed selvages reduce the width available for folds. The plan accounts for them before counting full fabric widths, then adds heading and hem allowances to each cut length.

The diagrams explain drops and allowances, not an optimized cutting layout. Printed patterns, directional fabric, lining and interlining are not included.
