Curtain panels, pairs & packs

Understand one-panel widths, matching sides, and package quantities before you order ready-made curtains.

A panel is one curtain

A panel is one separate piece of curtain. A pair contains two. A package can contain one, two, or another stated number of panels, so package count and curtain count are not interchangeable.

Read both the size and the package contents. For example, IKEA’s width guidance describes dimensions per curtain even when the product is sold as a pair. That example is useful, but it does not establish the labeling convention for every retailer.

Use the flat width of one panel

The panel calculator compares the total flat curtain width you need with the flat width supplied by each panel. A product’s already-gathered or made-to-measure finished width may use a different convention.

Before entering a width, answer: does this number describe one curtain, the combined pair, or its gathered coverage? Ask the seller if the listing does not say. Multiplying an already-pleated coverage width by fullness again can produce the wrong purchase quantity.

A simple example: a 90-inch rod

For this example, returns and center overlap are both zero. The chosen fullness is 2×, and each panel is 50 inches wide when flat.

WORKED EXAMPLE

90 in × 2 = 180 in of required flat width. 180 ÷ 50 = 3.6, so use at least 4 panels. Their combined width is 200 in. At 2 panels per package, buy 2 packages.

Equal sides can change the count

If you want matching curtains on each side of a center opening, choose the balanced-pair option. The calculator rounds up the requirement for each side, then combines them. A total of three panels may cover the span mathematically but cannot be split into two equal whole-panel groups.

The result separately lists panels to use and panels to buy. Packaging may leave you with a spare; a spare does not automatically increase the fullness of the curtains you plan to hang.

Check these details before ordering

A width calculation is one part of the purchase. Confirm these product details against your measurements.

  • The listing’s width is flat width per panel.
  • The selected length works with your heading and hanging hardware.
  • The package contains the panel count used in the calculation.
  • The fabric and heading support your chosen fullness.
  • The product’s care guidance fits your intended use.
